Round 16 - Mounties v Cabramatta Bundaberg Rum Cup
Mounties have beaten Cabramatta in their round 16 Bundaberg Red Cup clash to remain on track for a top three finish to the minor premiership.
Mounties opened the scoring in the eight minute when flying winger Adam El-Zebeideh made his traditional 1st touchdown of the game after out pacing his opponent and having the presence of mind to bring the ball around beside the posts to make it 6-0.
Moments later it was centre Shannon Chapman who got himself on the scoresheet when he ran onto a beautifully timed pass from skipper Damien Mostyn and shrugged off a defender to scoot around beside the opposite upright to allow an easy conversion and a 12-0 lead.
Cabramatta then got themselves back into the game when they crossed out wide after some handy lead up work and then scored again when the Mounties defenders let a bomb bounce in the in goal with a wicked bounce sending the ball back over their heads and into the arms of the Cabramatta chasers for 12-10.
Mounties than clicked into gear and returned the favour when an Anthony Farah bomb was spilled by the Cabramatta fullback and on the spot front rower Pat Galea toed the ball through and planted it over the line for his ninth try of the season which could lead to him being sacked from the front rowers club for a place in the back line.
The conversion went wide and Mounties led 16-10.
Mounties then attacked the Cabramatta line at will with only desperate defence denying them further points until centre Charlie Herekotukutuku found some space on the right edge and bamboozled the defence to touchdown for another unconverted try and a lead of 20-10 at the break.
Cabramatta came out firing after half time while Mounties went into a slumber with some costly mistakes allowing Cabramatta to score two quick tries and take the lead 22-20 however Mounties then re-focused their attention and make several breaks which broke down on the last play until captain Damien Mostyn crossed the line only to have the ball stripped from him and it was ruled no try.
That was the catalyst for Mounties and they then went on the rampage with half Anthony Farah putting through a grubber close to the line for him to regather between two defenders and score to make it 26-22 before Tere Glassie followed the exploits of his fellow front rower Pat Galea to score a try when he powered onto a short pass close to the line skittling defenders as he crashed over for 32-22.
With time running out for the home team it was Drew Dalton who put the nail in the coffin when he took on the defence himself and smashed through four defenders to score an individual converted try to make it 38-22 with Cabramatta scoring a late consolation try to make the final score 38-28.
Mounties Sydney Shield had a loss over Cabramatta while their A Grade and C Grade both recorded wins to hold their respective position within the top five of their competitions.
Mounties next game is against Wentworthville on Sunday 1st August at 3pm while Sydney Shield kickoff at 1:20pm and A grade at 11:40pm all at Mounties Sports Ground.
C Grade have the bye.
